We do have some ripe berries but not enough to support a large number of customers. We have been blessed with great looking strawberries filled with natural sweetness and wonderful flavor that can't be beat. We have only the Camorosa variety (the shipper's mistake). These are a naturally sweet berry. 
REMEMBER, our berries are not sprayed with any herbicides, pesticides,or fungicides. So bringthe family out for the day and enjoy fresh, wholesome, goodness that is well worth the drive.
Again, our famous "silo Kitchen" will be serving up some fine strawberry icecream, shortcake, and great sandwiches. 
Looking forward to seeing you all.

From the North, (Atlanta, Macon, Perry)take Interstate 75 South to the Perry- Marshalville, Exit 135. Exit right. Travel on Highway 224 past mile marker 3. Look for sign on right.Turn left onto Mennonite Church Road. You will see our silo on the left.

From Americus: Take Hwy 49 north to Hwy. 26, turn right on 26, after going through Montezuma, take Hwy. 224 left approximately 2 miles to our sign (on left). Turn right on Mennonite Church Road. You will see our silo on the left.

From Columbus & Phenix City: Take U.S. 280 east of Columbus, Georgia. Take 26 east thru Buena Vista, Elaville, Oglethorpe, and Montezuma. After going thru Montezuma, take 224 left approximately 2 miles to our sign on left. Turn right onto Mennonite Church Road. The silo is on the left at the top of the hill.

From the South (Cordele, Tifton, Valdosta) Take Hwy 26 west (Exit 127) past mile marker 16. Turn right on Whitehouse Rd. At the end of Whitehouse road, turn left. The silo is on the right at the top of the hill.

]]>Mon, 17 Jan 2011 20:52:07 -0600<![CDATA[Strawberries]]>We planted Camerosa for the 2011 season. I had hoped to have some variety and ordered 3 varieties. When the truck arrived he only had one variety. Camerosa is a cultivar with great total productivity, substantially greater early productivitiy, larger fruit, firmer fruit, and is a vigorous plant. Plants are healthy and have been blooming since early December. Of course, it is too early for production. So these blooms are lost. But the plants seem to be eagerly wanting to produce more blooms as weather warms up. We plant to start freeze protection around the first of February.

We have been working the land, as well, to keep the soil soft and weed free for the plastic bed machine to do its job well.  We plan to make the beds around September 23-25. We plan to plant the berries starting on October 12.

One of our favorite things to do at Kauffman's is to teach - especially children. We  love children and enjoy teaching about fruit and vegetable production or other aspects of farm living.

Price is $6.00 per child

(Homeschoolers pay for one get one free!)

Teachers and bus drivers complimentary passes

Our Tour Includes:

  • one small basket of berries
  • hay ride around the farm
  • pet and feed the animals in the barn
  • Small cup of ice cream 
  • visit inside the silo
  • memories of a fun day on the farm!

Picnic and play area provided.

Each tour lasts approximately 1hour and 15 minutes. Please encourage children to wear appropriate clothing and tennis shoes or closed toed shoes to the farm.

*Silo* Sandwich Shop

This silo was built to store chopped corn stalks called silage. The purpose of "ensiling" feed is to preserve (cure or pickle) it so that it can be fed year-round. These silos provide an excellent atmosphere to "ensile" feed. However, many farms in the south find that the silo is not economicly feasible as a storage option because of the large volume of feed needed on a large farm.  Some silos in our area are still being used but others sit empty because of changes in feed storage practices. This particular silo was erected to feed beef cattle and young dairy cattle. Located in the "feed lot" and adjoining silo, the Farmarket and Silo Sandwich Shop provide all of our products for sale at Kauffman's. The Farmarket displays the freshly picked strawberries, veggies, flowers, herbs, jams, jellies and other retail.

The Silo is home of our famous strawberry and peach icecream, strawberry lemonade, yummy strawberry turnovers and fresh strawberry cake.

Our U-pick will open on Saturday the 17/th. We are still waiting on pending certification for the kitchen as new owners. So hopefully we will be able to serve icecream and shortake on Opening day.
